The Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism originated with the Indian mahasiddha Tilopa who lived in Northern India sometime around the 10th century. Tilopa received the "four special transmissions" and mastered them. Although he has human teachers as sources of these transmissions, his realization was so profound that he also received them directly from Vajradhara, the primordial buddha. Among his most important disciples is Naropa who was the main teacher of the Tibetan translator Marpa.
