Born as a prince to the royal family of the kingdom of the Shakyas, he was named "Siddhartha" ("Wish Accomplished"). At the age of 29 he left his kingdom to dedicate his life to the pursuit of awakening - a goal that he reached 6 years later in Bodhgaya. He is said to be the fourth buddha in a time period that will see the appearance of a thousand buddhas.
