Red Sandalwood Mala

Red sandalwood grows mostly in the southern Eastern Ghats mountains of South India. Although it is distinct from the white sandalwood known for its fragrance, it is nonetheless called “sandalwood” due to its scientific name Pterocarpus santalinusThis wood is valued for the rich red color and has only a very faint scent. In China, it is used for making exquisite traditional furniture, and until recent times often only available to royalty and aristocracy. It is used in traditional herbal medicine as an antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, anthelmintic, and tonic. Sometimes it’s said to contain aphrodisiac properties.
