1419) is the founder of the Gelukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Tsongkhapa was born into a nomadic family in the walled city of Tsongkha in Amdo, Tibet. He studied extensively with masters of the Sakyapa lineage as well as those of the Drigung Kagyupas and eventually recognized as an emanation of Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom. In particular, he saw himself as continuing the tradition of the early Kadampa masters even as he received teachings and transmissions from many lineages.
