Shakyamuni Buddha is the historical buddha, the buddha of our times who lived and taught during the 5th century BCE. Born as a prince to the royal family of the kingdom of the Shakyas, he was named "Siddhartha" ("Wish Accomplished"). At the age of 29 he left his kingdom to dedicate his life to the pursuit of awakening - a goal that he reached 6 years later in Bodhgaya. He is said to be the fourth buddha in a time period that will see the appearance of a thousand buddhas.
In this thangka, above the mandala are the Five Buddhas of the vajrayana system of Five Buddha-families. In the lower part we see Avalokitesvara with the two Taras. Ask for more detailed photos of this exquisite, one-of-a-kind thangka!
