Rahula Thangka (Hand Painted, 9.5" x 12")
This original, hand-painted thangka depicts Rahula, a powerful Dharma protector within the Nyingma lineage. Rahula is an emanation of an ancient Indian god, Rahula, known as a demi-god associated with the cosmic eclipses of the sun, moon, and other celestial bodies. In Nyingma traditions, Rahula is depicted with a unique and fearsome appearance: the lower body of a coiled naga (serpent spirit), and the upper body with four arms and nine heads. His belly features a wrathful face, which represents Rahula’s own head. The stacked nine heads above symbolize the nine planets that Rahula has consumed, while at the top of this stack sits the head of a black raven.
Symbolism & Meaning
Rahula is a wrathful protector who devours the planets, symbolizing his power over the cosmic forces of darkness and illusion. His multi-headed, multi-eyed form represents his vast perception and ability to cut through the darkness of ignorance, while the raven’s presence signifies his connection to deep wisdom and the ability to dispel obstacles. Rahula is especially revered in the Nyingma lineage, where his role as a protector of the terma teachings is crucial.
