This original, hand-painted thangka portrays Kyobpa Jikten Sumgon (1143–1217), the founder of the Drikung Kagyu lineage and one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist teachers of his time. A contemporary of the First Karmapa, Jikten Sumgön was born into a noble family, the Kyura clan, with divine ancestry, and his teachings have had a profound influence on Tibetan Buddhism for centuries. He was a master of many practices, particularly Yamantaka, and his monastery in Drikung attracted thousands of monks and practitioners from across Tibet, Central Asia, China, and the Himalayan region. Below him in the thangka are his two chief disciples, Sherab Jungne and Drakpa Jungne.
