Dalai Lama Enamel Pendant
His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the fourteenth incarnation of a line of great Tibetan lamas originating in Gyalwa Gendun Drup (1391–1474). He was one of the chief disciples of Jey Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelukpa Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Gendun Drup eventually became the first abbot of Ganden Monastery, the first Gelukpa monastery founded by Jey Tsongkhapa in 1409. Gendun Drup is honored as the first Dalai Lama when the third incarnation in this lineage of lamas (Sonam Gyatso, 1543–1588) was given the title "Dalai Lama" by the Mongolian ruler Altan Khan in 1578. The Dalai Lamas are all considered emanations of Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
