There are at least two distinctive forms of Ekajati - one from the Sarma traditions (i.e. Sakya, Kagyu and Geluk) where she is a yidam-deity of the kriya (action) tantra level (where she is also known as "Blue Tara") and the other from the Nyingma traditions where she appears as a dharma-protectress. In this thangka, we have the Nyingma form of Ekajati where she appears as one of the three main dharma-protectors of the Dzokchen teachings in particular. According to Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, Ekajati is "a personification of the essentially non-dual nature of primordial energy." When Ekajati appears to yogis in hagiographies, she is especially wrathful. She speaks in sharp piercing shrieks, her eye boiling as she gnashes her fang.
