Silver & Coral Clip (Mala Counter, Nepal)
This Tibetan-style mantra counter is designed to help keep track of mantra recitation and accumulation, a practice integral to Vajrayana traditions. In certain Vajrayana practices, there is a strong focus on the accumulation of mantras, sometimes totaling 10,000, 100,000, or even a million recitations. To assist with this, mantra counters are used.
There are two primary types of traditional mantra counters: one with a pair of tassels, each featuring 10 beads (with a mini vajra at one end and a mini bell at the other), and the clip-style counter used for counting 10,000s. This particular counter is of the clip-style, designed for those larger accumulations.
Symbolism & Meaning
Mantra counters, integral to Vajrayana practice, symbolize the dedication and focus required in mantra recitation. The counter helps maintain the accuracy and spiritual discipline needed for deep meditation and mantra-based practices. The vajra represents indestructibility and spiritual power, while the bell symbolizes the call to awakening.
