Aksobhya (Tib. Mitrukpa) is the buddha of the Vajra-family in the Five Buddha-families system of vajrayana. His pureland Abhirati is situated in the eastern quarter and is a pureland that only highly advanced bodhisattvas can be reborn in. The meditation practice and dharani of Aksobhya are popular among Buddhists of the Himalayan region, especially in the context of purifying negative karmas that lead to lower realms of rebirth. In recent years, HH the 17th Karmapa, Orgyen Thrinle Dorje, has emphasized the practice of Aksobhya.
