This original, hand-painted thangka portrays Mahakala, one of the most revered dharma-protectors in Vajrayana Buddhism. Known as the "Great Black One," Mahakala is a fierce deity who is believed to protect the Dharma from all harmful forces. The six-armed form depicted here belongs to the Shangpa Kagyu tradition, introduced to Tibet by Khedrub Khyungpo Naljor in the 12th century and later adopted by the Geluk tradition in the 15th century as the chief protector.

Symbolism & Meaning

Mahakala is the embodiment of the protective power that guards the Dharma and removes obstacles from the path of practitioners. His wrathful appearance, with his six arms and terrifying expression, symbolizes the destruction of ignorance, attachment, and hindrances to enlightenment. His role as a protector ensures the safety and continuity of the Buddhist teachings.
